Why OLED on Silicon?
As with any active matrix display, each pixel is activated directly so that a corresponding circuit delivers current to the cathode and anode materials, stimulating the OLED materials and causing them to emit light. Building eMagin’s microdisplays on silicon provides three significant benefits.
- eMagin microdisplays typically require no additional signal processing boards; the signal processing resides on the same silicon chip. This characteristic improves performance, lowers power consumption, and portable system reliability due to fewer interconnects.
- eMagin microdisplays gain an additional advantage in responsiveness as pixel data is buffered at each pixel site. Each pixel stays on with full data content and color content until the data is changed within the acceptable refresh ranges. As a result there is no flicker.
- eMagin SVGA 3D microdisplays also employ the built-in data buffer to perform 3D signal processing. This can provide TRUE 3D capability, limited only by your computer, software, and graphics card. The annoying and tiring effects of stereovision left-right eye shuttering are eliminated when using 3D mode.
In addition, eMagin has developed and implemented proprietary encapsulation technology for its microdisplays that has proven effective in testing and in real-world applications.
